En el context dels documents web, el terme validador HTML es refereix tècnicament a la validació utilitzant DTDs per eines SGML. No obstant això, l'ús comú (no tècnic) del terme es refereix a la verificació d'un document HTML per a diversos problemes utilitzant algun tipus de verificador informatitzat, i no necessàriament mitjançant l'ús d'un DTD amb eines SGML. A més, el terme validació HTML per a HTML 5 no pot significar validació utilitzant un DTD perquè HTML 5 no utilitza un DTD.
